EP 002 – FROM DRUGS TO BUGS

On this week’s episode of Heal Yourself Radio we’re talking to Dr. Grace Liu, a functional medicine expert with a doctorate in pharmacy. Her area of expertise involves the clinical applications of one of the hottest topics in science and medicine, the gut micro biome. This interview is full of great information about the importance of your gut bacteria, what foods to use to support it, and what to do if you’ve been on antibiotics. We also had a lot of fun talking about poop, whose poop Dr. Grace wants inside of her, and what might make my feces so interesting. It was a really fun interview, and I think you are all in for a little treat.

    Hi Dr Grace,

I’m hoping to treat my ADD and dandruff, the latter got only slightly better after Nystatin/lower-carb. I just got my gut results from Ubiome and it looks like I’m missing a few phylum, mine only shows 4: Firmicutes, Bacteroides and tiny amounts of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria, rest is unclassified. As far as the genus, very high Bacteroides, while good guys like Bifidobacterium and Roseburia are low. Lactobacillus doesn’t even show up in genus level, I guess I’m not taking as much probiotics as I thought. The family Enterobacteriaceae is also very low, I will try to get Mutaflor for that as my e-coli may be gone too.

If some important bacteria is completely missing from my results, such as Akkermansia, does this mean it’s extinct or just so low that uBiome can’t pick it up? I already eat plenty of your recommended prebiotics and unwashed veggies, but may consider fecal transplant if that alone isn’t enough.

Thanks for your help, I really enjoy your blog and podcasts.

    Hi Dr. Grace,
I have read in the past that you are not taking new clients. I would love to know if you have a waiting list. I am hoping that you can help me with my 5 year old daughter. Thanks so much!

      Eme’s Mom,

Yes please contact me via the ‘contact’ tab above.

      • Eme’sMom

Thank you! When I go to your contact page there is no “button” to submit by message. Hope that makes sense, lol. I’ve tried twice…once on a PC and once on my cell phone.

I think it is working now, been getting my msgs! Thx for your patience. Let me know if not work for you

Yeasts can really take over after we have had antibiotics several times and no bifid/akkermansia/roseburia to combat them off. Did you see my PaleoFx slides and the story of Eli Markstrom, Spartan Warrior? My story is a lot like this (although I’m not an elite athlete ahah lol). Case B in the Paleofx preso featured Mr Brown who effectively brought Akkermansia back from the brink of ‘extinction’ after antibiotics, high sugar diets, stress, etc. Both Eli and I are are regrowing Verrucomicrobiales as indicated (uBiome — I like this analysis).

    Ck it out!

      Dr Grace,

Where can I find your Paleofx slides?

      • DrGracePharmD-Gut_Goddess

        Hi Noel

Have you signed up with you email at the top right? We’ll mail to you! Thx!

    Hi Grace,

quick question I hope you can answer: I am having a FMT treatment at the taymount clinic (London) next month. They ask you to do 4 weeks of Mag07 cleansing supplement, a colonic hydrotherapy session 10 days before the treatment, and a bowel cleanser like picolax or moviprep the day before. What is your opinion on this preparation method? Necessary?
    Thanks a bunch
    Jane

    • gutgoddess

      Hi Jane

Disruptions to the gut may be both helpful and harmful because it depends on the composition. Bowel prep before colonoscopy or FMT is standard in most protocols right now. I don’t know what the outcomes are if deviation from this was introduced. Will you be doing standard antibiotics or anti-protozoal treatment prior to the FMT?

Would love to hear more and your progress/challenges later

    Hi Dr. Grace,
I was recently diagnosed with giardia and prescribed metronidazole to treat. I was wondering how this antibiotic will affect my gut flora and what steps I should take to ensure I maintain a healthy gut during this treatment? Thank you.

    • DrGracePharmD-Gut_Goddess

      Travis

That is great you have figured out a common disorder in dysbiotic guts. Hopefully you and your gut will feel better soon. Metronidazole and other strong antibiotics can result in yeast/candida and E coli overgrowths. Although they are used to fight Clostridium, it will ‘select’ for the most hearty and tenacious Clostridium and these may overgrow later.

Healthy guts can remain healthy with major disturbances like antibiotics with the 7 Steps including probiotics

      https://thegutinstitute.com/7-steps

There are hundreds of studies that show antibiotic damage (diarrhea, Clostridium difficile overgrowths, etc) will be minimized with probiotic use.

Would love to hear what works for you and your microbiota, later gut testing, and improvements with treatment of giardia soon!

Thank you for your rapid response Dr. Grace. I am currently out of the country in Peru for the next week so have limited access to some of the things you mention in the 7 steps, however I have a probiotic (primal defense ultra) and have been taking two capsules every two hours after each dose of metronidazole and have ordered prescript assist and primal flora to be waiting for me when I get home. Do you have any other suggests the I could benefit from? Should I consider a Berberine supplement too in order to limit the chance I develop yeast/candida overgrowth?

        • DrGracePharmD-Gut_Goddess

          Travis

Those are wonderful probiotics however I would consider later to do testing to find what is missing in terms of the symbionts and work on building these up. Peru sounds amazing. Would love to hear what works for you and the results of testing.
